Chapter 25

Izzy and Conlin were escorted to the stairs. When she was clear of his guards, she leaned closer to Conlin and tilted her chin, allowing her lips to brush the bottom of his ear. A small tremor ran through Conlin's body. She chided herself. Turning him on was not the objective, but she also didn't want anyone else to overhear their conversation. "Why separate us? Why not see us all at once?"

Conlin leaned in and nuzzled her neck before whispering, "Power. Four of us in a room with him alone? Not smart. He didn't know if he could trust us."

"But he could have had guards in the room, no?"

"He could have, but with his second in command MIA, I doubt he trusts even his oldest guards right now."

"Oh." Izzy wondered how she didn't think of that. It seemed obvious once he pointed it out. She wasn't a stupid girl, but these kinds of intrigues were a new kind of learning.

"Dru, you're up, my man. Tex wants to talk to you about the attacks. You, too, Travis," he nodded to where Travis leaned against the wall.

"Shit," Dru muttered as he made his way through the throng of people. While they'd been upstairs, the club kids had arrived. Masses of pale skinned, black draped forms writhed to Sisters of Mercy's "This Corrosion." Dru's red head shone above the sea of black as he fought his way to the stairs. Conlin chuckled, and it brought her attention back to him.

"You did well in there," Conlin said, surprising her.

"I didn't do much of anything except ask stupid questions and embarrass myself by what little control I have over my thoughts," she laughed. "But thanks."

Conlin smiled, and she felt it to her knees. How he had such power over her she had no idea. A simple smile could floor her. "No, really. You have no game, which in this situation is advantageous. Shows you are honest. You can't school your face to cover your emotions, either. And, you showed backbone. Tex will respect those things. I don't know much about him, but I do know that."

"Well, that's good. I wouldn't want to be on his bad side."

Conlin grew serious. "No, you wouldn't."

"Although fang boy's kinda cute."

Conlin's brows shot up. "Cute? Fang boy is cute?"

Izzy laughed. He was jealous. This was fun. Much better than thinking about impending death.

"We were attacked here tonight, Izz. Attacked. If he'd wanted more than a taste, we could have been walking zombies, and you're talking about a vampire being cute?"

"A girl notices these things." Izzy winked. She didn't know why she felt compelled to goad him. Perhaps she needed an outlet for her growing anxiety. It wasn't exactly fair to him, but she couldn't seem to stop herself.

Conlin grabbed the seat of her stool, turned it, and drug it until it came flush with his own. Her back was against his chest, his powerful legs on either side of hers. His breath tickled her neck a second before his teeth grazed the tender flesh below her ear.
